In the wake of the recent announcement that some brands of chocolate ice, biscuits and other sweets are now available in Canada, some Canadians are wondering whether they’re too sweet.
The new menu is called “the Chocolate Ice Cream Bar”, and it’s being offered in stores and online.
“It’s got chocolate ice and chocolate chips and the chocolate bits are more than the ice cream bits.
I’m still a little confused by that,” said one consumer in the comments section of an article on CBC News Canada.
“I like to have something in my house that’s more sweet, so that I can have something that’s a bit more chocolate,” said another.
A spokeswoman for Canada’s Food Standards Agency says there’s no way to tell if a product is too sweet, because it depends on the food and the flavour.
“A product that has been tested for its taste and aroma may be too sweet and, therefore, will be labelled as such,” spokeswoman Heather Smith said in an email.
“However, we have no way of knowing whether a product has been labelled as too sweet for consumers to understand and choose accordingly.”
Smith says it’s up to the retailer to tell consumers what to do if they’re unsure.
“We have no control over what people choose to order or whether they want to eat what they ordered,” she said.
“As the consumer, you can choose to eat whatever you want, but you can’t control what other people are ordering or what they’re putting on the menu.”
Smith says the government has issued a warning for products like chocolate ice-cream bars and chocolate ice chunks, saying they can cause health problems for people with allergies.
